Lately other local media have been catching up to the unlikely story of the late street photographer Vivian Maier, whose pictures would have made one amazing "Around Town" gallery. In fact, they sort of did.

Since we and others featured Maier's photography in 2009 John Maloof, who purchased Maier's collection of over 100,000 negatives and 3,000 prints at an estate auction shortly before Maier's death, has been busy trying to get a documentary book on Maier's life off the ground. Maier's photography will also receive its first proper exhibition at the Chicago Cultural Center, starting with an opening reception from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday. Finding Vivian Maier: Chicago Street Photographer will run through April 3.
