Rahm Gets Lots of Campaign Cash From A Select Few

By Chuck Sudo in News on Jan 21, 2011 5:40PM

We know that Rahm Emanuel has collected a lot of cash for his mayoral campaign in a short period of time, but where is the cash coming from and how much is coming from whom? Would you be surprised to discover that 1 percent of Emanuel's donors come from the coasts? And they account for 23 percent of his campaign contributions? It's like a microcosm of wealth in America.

23 of Emanuel's donors have written checks to his campaign for at least $100,000. It's a who's who of Chicago power brokers and out-of-town celebrities and businessmen like Donald Trump, Steven Spielberg, Apple CEO Steve Jobs and music mogul David Geffen. One of the biggest donors to the Countdown to Rahmageddon has been Mighty Morphing Power rangers creator Haim Saban and wife Cheryl, with a contribution of $110,000 each. The Chicago Mercantile Exchange, whose CEo has already endorsed Emanuel, is the campaign's largest donor at $200,000.

The war chest Emanuel has amassed far surpasses the single election totals Mayor Daley raised in his 1989 mayoral campaign (with Emanuel as his chief campaign fundraiser) and 2007.
