Museum Attendance Down in 2010

The Sun-Times reports that attendance at area museums and zoos was down 3 percent over 2009. Which probably explains the spate of free days that kicked off 2011 at the Art Institute and other museums.
The reasons for the decline are — what else — the economy. A leveling off at the Art Institute occurred last year after the '09 opening of its Modern Wing. You can also read the handy PDF of the attendance comparisons here.
