Chair Free Chicago Takes Up Shovels

Chair Free Chicago (remember them) announced this morning they were organizing a "shovel out" in Bridgeport in an attempt to advocate helping each other dig out from the Blizzaster and promote their dibs-free mission.
According to their press spokeswoman Kartina Cabrera, "Most of the reports we've been getting about side streets not being plowed centered on Lincoln Square and Bridgeport." Cabrera and five to six others drove around Bridgeport until they found a stretch of Lock Ave., near 31st Street. Then they parked, grabbed their shovels and started digging around 1 p.m.
The photos don't do what they've been doing the past three hours enough justice. They started at the west side of Lock, where the trucks are in the distance, and shoveled everything out to the intersection with 31st. When I caught up with them, they were just starting on the east side of Lock. Cabrera said that she and the others would continue to clear out the cars "until our arms give out." As for hanging Chair Free Chicago signage, they won't be doing that. "All we're doing is trying to help out right now," Cabrera said. "What the folks do with these cleared out spaces is up to them."
