In the wake of this week's blizzard, a number of family pets have been lost around the city. But a German Shepherd that broke loose during the storm in Chicago Heights has been rescued by volunteers at the South Suburban Humane Society.

According to the Tribune, the dog, whom volunteers and staffers have named Julia, was spotted tied to a pole in the parking lot on Tuesday. An employee arriving at the shelter tried to get to the dog, but she broke free before before he could get to her. With forecasters predicting a massive blizzard, a search and rescue team was formed that searched diligently for the dog, which kept returning to the parking lot. But they were unable to coax her to safety and kept running off. "She was just terrified," executive director Emily Klehm told the Tribune. "That's when we gathered everyone we could find to try and coax her to come inside." As the storm descended on Chicago, they called the search off, resigned to leaving the dog to her fate. She reappeared Thursday morning. Staffers were able to persuade the dog to safety, and "she was so confused and frightened, yet we were all crying and hugging each other," Klehm said.
