Cook County Leads Country in Black-Owned Businesses

2010_12_14_census_logo.png Data collected by the Census Bureau over a five-year period from 2002-2007 showed that Cook County led the nation in number of businesses owned by African Americans. Cook County's 83,733 black-owned businesses account for 4.4 percent of the nation's total. The country overall saw a 61 percent increase in African American owned businesses over that period.

The primary businesses African Americans opened in Cook County were led by repair, maintenance, personal and laundry services, followed by health care and social services. Overall, black-owned businesses account for 23 percent of all businesses in Cook County.
