A charter for a new elementary school in Englewood will be considered on Wednesday by the Chicago Public Schools board. The Montessori School of Englewood Charter would be located at 7033 S. Honore St.--the site of a former Catholic school--and would offer classes for 240 students from kindergarten through sixth grade.

Rita Nolan, from the Montessori Network, said to the Chicago Tribune that the idea for the school came from the network's offering of a Montessori program for preschool through second grade at Stagg Elementary School in Englewood. The Stagg Montessori program has grown so popular in two years that it now has 100 students on its waiting list, she said. Since funding isn't available to expand the program, the new charter was proposed. "Our aim is to just do what we can for school reform in underserved communities," Nolan said to the Tribune.
