Want to put the devastation of last week's earthquake and the resulting tsunami into perspective? A 19-year-old tumblr user named Kelly T. mapped out how far inland the tsunami went inland in Japan (check out these photos compiled by the Daily Mail for a reference) and imposed that on a map of Chicago.

As you can see from the map, the area in red is how far a tsunami with the power of last week's would travel inward, wiping out a fair amount of the city proper. The far northwest side where we grew up would probably see, at the very least, some basement flooding. It's a sobering reminder of the destruction the Japanese people are just starting to dig out of right now.
