No "FKNNUTS" Get Past These License Plate Screeners

2011_3_18_banned_license_plates.jpg Funny article in the Sun-Times today about the lengths some people will go to to get objectionable personalized license plates and the staff at Jesse White's Secretary of State's office charged with making sure nothing off-color gets past them.

Candace Wanzo, who heads the Secretary of State's Specialty Plate Department, and her staff of 15 use web searches, Google Translate and Urban Dictionary to stay on top (heh) of creative ways of getting profanity, slang, vulgar acronyms and their foreign language counterparts, and constantly evolving text message gibberish to keep personalized license plates within the realms of good taste. Wanzo's department even has a "Special Plate Inhibit List" with close to 4,800 banned plates... and the list grows by 20 each week.

We don't know what frustrates us more: that there's a staff of 15 people charged with keeping plates like DIKSUKR from gracing a license plate? Or that there's a state full of people who are trying to get variations of DIKSUKR on a license plate.
