Dead Rider is led by ex-U.S. Maple guitarist Todd Rittmann and while his current band retains the unease that ran through his previous outfits albums and shows, it fills the space between those shudders with a stronger rhythmic attack. On their new album, The Raw Dents, the group's sound is rounded out by new drummer (but familiar Chicago scene musician) Matt Espy and its his talents that really help draw the disparate threads of the band's attack. The band has sent us a track to premiere from their new disc, so plug in "Stop Motion" to see what we mean.

The track opens with a darkly funky drum beat complemented by menacing, whispered vocals that are soon displaced by a gently ascending squall of guitar noise. The repetition built into that structure suddenly drops out, giving way to a wobbly bass and rumbling deep end. And then everything shifts again creating a sonic vertigo that's nonetheless calming.
