"We Believe" was supposed to be the quintessential Cubs documentary. There were plans for a full theatrical release and expectations to sell millions of copies. The investors of the documentary believed in it, but are now alleging the filmmakers misrepresented their resources and filed a lawsuit in the Cook County Circuit Court Wednesday.

The documentary followed the Cubs through their 2008 season, which was their best regular season record since 1945. The peg was supposed to be a Cub MLB champion title on the 100 year anniversary. The top-seeded Cubs went into the playoffs with hope and an entire city behind them. And failed miserably. They lost three straight games in the opening round to the third-seeded Los Angeles Dodgers, the ball club that can't take care of itself.

So the documentary is about the hopeless romantics rooting for the team that hasn't won a World Series in 102 years. It was released straight to DVD in 2009. The investors put up $650,000 because they were allegedly informed distributors and corporate sponsors were secured by the filmmakers. There's always next year... for court proceedings to finalize.
