Seek Out The (Unholy?) Grails

By Jon Graef in Arts & Entertainment on Apr 29, 2011 8:40PM

Grails are an instrumental rock band from Portland, Oregon, with an extensive discography suggesting that, contrary to popular belief, Portland(ia) is not where young people go to retire. Rather, Portland is where you go to make eclectic, genre-busting instrumental music. Deep Politics, the trio's latest, is a blend of down tempo electronics, expansive arrangements versed in film music, cutting-edge cut-and-paste composition techniques, and prog-rock.

Temporary Residence Ltd. put out Deep Politics in March, and it's been a constantly satisfying listening experience ever since. (Though, with the nice weather and all, Politics will likely be saved for rainy days, what with its general moodiness being ill-suited to sunshine and happiness). Grails hit the Empty Bottle on Saturday, where their sound will be a perfect fit for the venue. You don't need to answer me these questions three in order to find -- and enjoy -- Grails. Just listen to "I Led Three Lives" and watch its video below:
