The White Sox and Minnesota Twins were thought by most baseball experts to be contending for the Al Central Crown before the season began. Instead, the two teams have struggled to stay out of the division cellar. The White Sox now have a stranglehold on the bottom after Francisco Liriano pitched the first no-hitter against the Twins in nearly 20 years. Liriano's no-no required 123 pitches, only 66 of them were strikes. He struck out 2 and walked six, which is an even larger indictment on how badly the Sox lineup is hitting these days. Edwin Jackson matched Liriano but gave up a home run to Jason Kubel that provided the margin of victory.
Even though he disn't get the win, Ryan Dempster finally turned in a quality start for the Cubs. Dempster pitched seven innings of one-run ball, Carlos Pena hit a hume run and Geovany Soto broke a 1-1 tie with a two-out, two run double in the ninth inning to give Kerry Wood a victory at Chavez Ravine. Carlos Marmol picked up his eighth save of the season.
