Stunning news this morning out of the Art Institute as its president, James Cuno, announced his resignation effective June 30 to take over the LA-based J. Paul Getty Trust.

The biggest achievement during Cuno's seven years at AIC was easily the opening of its Modern Wing two years ago, which led to an increase in exhibition space and attendance, despite an increase in admission fees. Cuno also spearheaded rehabs of the Southeast Asian and Japanese galleries and upcoming rehabs of the Institute's African Art and Indian Art of the Americas galleries. When he takes over the Getty Trust in August, Cuno will oversee the Getty's museum, research and conservation institutes and grant-making foundation. The Getty's $5 billion endowment is the largest in the country. Cuno will be taking over the reins of an organization that appears to be regaining its bearings after years of instability.
