APPetizing: Hamburger America GPS

2011_5_26HamburgerAmerica.jpg Apps for cooking, finding restaurants and carrying around discounts are being released so fast our iPhone is going to overheat. In this occasional series, Chicagoist brings you our favorite foodie iPhone Apps, so you don't have to try them all.

One of the best categories of food apps is the GPS app - push a button, find a bar/restaurant/deal nearby. Whether your a tourist in a new city or a resident looking for a quick bite, these apps make it easy for you to find a meal on the go or a new favorite spot. Hamburger America GPS, the companion app to George Motz's book and film of the same name, will guide you through America's hamburger classics.

What qualifies? Well, Motz has to have been there (the man has eaten over 10,000 burgers) and the burgers have to be made from fresh meat. There are notes and photos of the restaurants and the burgers. There are 10 restaurants in Chicago in the app right now, and more are being added all the time. Once you pick a restaurant, the profile page will link you to the menu, display pictures and videos, and allow you to add the burger joint to specialized lists - "Favorite Burgers," "Been There," or "Planning to Go."

Frankly, we've already heard of all the places in Chicago, but it could be useful if we forget exactly where they are or need suggestions on what to order. Primarily, we'll keep the app on our phone for traveling. Plus, it's free, so what's the downside?
