The official word from Metra is "equipment failure" caused the cancellation of 6 Union Pacific West Line trains this morning. But the equipment is actually a lack of people to staff the trains.
Metra spokesman Mark Davis told the Tribune the shortages, which he also laid on the lap of Union Pacific, were due to a convergence of vacations, family leave and illness that left the route shorthanded. Metra is working on staffing replacements so that the line can get back up and running as soon as possible.
