Oak Park residents inclined to dabble in beekeeping may soon be able to do so after the village board voted 6-1 in favor of repealing a ban on the activity.

The village now needs to dot the i's and cross the t's by finalizing details such as establishing barriers around hives and setting up notification requirements for prospective beekeepers to let their neighbors know that they're doing so. If the board's vote can be used as a barometer, then the ban seems almost certain to be repealed.

Oak Park is modeling its beekeeping repeal on a similar motion that passed in Evanston five years ago. Since then, Evanston has six registered beekeepers. Oak Park expects a relatively low number of beekeeper permits, as well.
