A Mexican Rock Goddess Makes a Beer Garden by the Lake Home

2011_6_22_guerra.jpg We've been fans of Mexican rock singer Ely Guerra for years. Think of Neko Case with a more breathy singing delivery incorporating elements of electronica, Mexican pop and balls-out rock and a penchant for getting lost singing passionate nonverbal passages in her songs and you have an idea of what Guerra brings to the stage. She's on a short list of musical acts we've seen in concert who have consistently impressed us live in venues ranging from Double Door to a show at republic last September.

Guerra is one of the featured performers in the National Museum of Mexican Arts' 2011 Sor Juana Series, honoring the contributions of Mexican women to the arts. She'll be performing a free concert at an odd venue on July 10 - Navy Pier Beer Gardens. Whether Guerra can command the attentions of tourists and bros for two hours, we don't know. But we wouldn't bet against her and this would be a great opportunity to dive into Guerra's music.

Ely Guerra plays a free show 6-8 p.m. July 10 at Navy Pier Beer Gardens, 600 E. Grand Ave.
