Simple Cooking: Grilled Bananas with Chocolate Sauce

By Caitlin Klein in Food on Jun 22, 2011 4:40PM

Despite the raging storms that are mercilessly pummeling Chicago, it's still officially summertime and that means you officially need to get in front of the grill. Summertime is a great time to try grilling things you might not think to grill; think avocados, watermelon, and peaches. This week, try grilling bananas - we'll show you how. This is an easy way to end a cookout, because the grill will already be hot.

Chicagoist's Grilled Bananas with Chocolate Sauce (serves 2)

Ingredients
1 banana
¼ cup brown sugar
¼ cup chocolate chips
1 shot Kahlua or other coffee liqueur

Instructions

  1. Slice the banana lengthwise, keeping the peel on.

  2. Grill, cut side down, for about 2 minutes. Grilling the cut side of the banana is mostly to get those good looking grill marks.

  3. Carefully flip the banana, peel side down. Grill for 5-6 minutes, or until the banana is hot and the peel starts to soften and blacken.

  4. While the banana is grilling peel side down, mix together the brown sugar, chocolate chips, and Kahlua. Heat in a saucepan, stirring constantly.

  5. Plate the banana, peel still on, and drizzle chocolate sauce on the top. Eat with a fork right out of the peel.
