A 19-year-old was arrested on gun possession charges outside Water Tower Place Monday night after the group he was with was approached by a police commander.

Dmitri Stephen of the 4500 block of North Clarendon ran and tried to get rid of his gun after Sgt. Kenneth Angarone approached the group he was with. News Affairs Sgt. Antoinette Ursitti credited Angarone's attention to detail for the collar.

“This shows the effort that was put forth by Chicago Police at every level — the diligence of the members at every rank — the commander in the lead — and the officers who apprehended him,” Ursitti said.

Or it shows the Police Department is on high alert in the wake of the recent Streeterville assaults and Angarone approached the group out of speculation as much as diligence. Regardless, Stephen was charged with unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, both felonies, and is held on $25,000 bond.
