Morning Box Score: Dunn Explodes for Sox, Cubs Fizzle in DC

By Chuck Sudo in News on Jul 5, 2011 2:00PM

White Sox 5, Royals 4

It says a lot about how Adam Dunn's season has gone that he received a standing ovation for a single in the fourth inning. But Dunn also hit a two-run homer and was at the plate when a 10th inning balk by Royals pitcher Aaron Crow scored AJ Pierzynski with the winning run. Mark Buehrle turned in a Buehrle-esque performance over seven innings but didn't pick up the win as Sergio Santos blew a save opportunity in the Royals half of the ninth inning. Santos got the win, instead.

Nationals 5, Cubs 4

At Nationals Park the Cubs relief corps gave away a game. Kerry Wood couldn't find the strike zone when it mattered, walking home the tying run in the ninth inning, while Carlos Marmol's wild pitch in the 10th inning plated Jayson Werth with the winning run. Sergio Mateo took the loss in this game and also suffered an injured elbow while on the mound. Malon byrd, Alfonso Soriano and Geovany Soto drove in the Cubs' runs.
