Constructor Craft Fair: Big City Style in a Roadhouse Setting

By Michele Lenni in Arts & Entertainment on Jul 7, 2011 7:40PM

constructor.jpg As the summer months wear on the vast amount of things to do can be, well, a bit overwhelming. In our already over-scheduled lives who, besides that crazy aunt, has the time to do Christmas shopping early? Who has the time to find that perfect birthday, shower, wedding gift that doesn't consist of a plastic card with a dollar amount on it?

Well fear not. If you're looking to combine a day of socializing with your friends, eating, day-drinking and shopping into one space without having to visit a shopping mall, Constructor Craft Fair is right up your alley. This Saturday at Fitzgerald's located in our neighbor to the west Berwyn, you can kill all these birds with one stone and have a good time doing so. After perusing the Constructor website we found some local and not-so-local artists that really tickled our fancy.

Here are a few that you may be interested in shopping with this coming Saturday:

Moxie Doll - My Heart IL.jpg
My Heart Belongs to Illinois / Moxie Doll
Moxiedoll is a one-woman-machine hailing from suburban Forest Park who blends her love of pop culture, literature and homemade retro stitching to create some of the most interesting and detailed art created with a needle and thread. Our personal favorite, of course, is the "My Heart Belongs in Illinois" design, which is soon to grace the walls of the Chicagoist offices.

berwyn-t.jpg
Berwyn T-Shirt / Megan Lee Designs
Megan Lee is former graphic designer and current dachshund owner living and working in her home in Berwyn. From pad and paper to t-shirt, Megan Lee designs every t-shirt, tote, infant onesie and greeting card to come out of wildly creative mind. Our favorite for Saturday is obviously this Dustin Shuler inspired design of the former Spindle sculpture at Cermak Plaza. We know what to get Tankboy for Christmas this year.

kate funk-rasta cat.jpg
Rasta-Cat Greeting Card / Kate Ward
Kate and her cat-friend AC from Milwaukee makes the most ridiculously hilarious greeting cards we have seen to date. Posing in pictures ranging from this Rasta-Cat to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, we literally had tears in our eyes from the guffaws that ensued upon their viewing.

Christina Ward-Golem of Prague.jpg
Golem of Prague / Christina Ward
Hailing from Milwaukee, Ms. Christina Ward delights in creating whimsical creatures out of felt and stuffing using her knowledge of mythology and religious iconography. Our favorite is this little stuffed Golem of Prague. Originally created by Rabbi Loew of Prague in the 1500s, the Golem was seen as a protector and is kept alive with magic and religious words.
