As we mentioned first thing this morning, the Chicago area is in for a heat wave this week. Thunderstorms predicted for today and tomorrow could give us some respite from the heat, but south-southwest winds mean that even heading to the lakefront will diminish any comfort you may find with a dip in the water. Thursday could be the hottest day of the year, with a predicted high of 98 degrees expected.

Ever since the heat wave of 1995 area residents have been asked to check on their elderly neighbors and we're being asked to do the same this week. If you know of a neighbor who could benefit from a wellness check, please call 311 if you can't make the check yourself. The Tribune has a list of cooling centers located throughout the city while the city's website has a list of overnight shelters for the homeless to get out of the heat.
