Open Books, the literacy nonprofit that runs bookstore full of affordable and donated books to fund their writing workshops, is having a sidewalk sale this weekend. From 12pm to 5pm on Saturday July 23 and Sunday July 24, shop thousands of used books prices $1 to $3. There will also be readings form Shel Silverstein's Where the Sidewalk Ends, refreshments, a raffle, and a Special Smurf Storytime at 12 pm on Sunday. (213 W. Institute Pl.)

Music

Sheer Terror plays Saturday at Reggies with a bunch of awesome local Chicago bands including The Wanderers (from NW Indiana) and Kamakazie Eyes. (2105 S. State St.)

Film

The Silent Film Society of Chicago's annual "Silent Summer" film festival kicks off today with a screening of Howard Hawks' 1928 film A Girl in Every Port. This film also marks the debut of Louise Brooks' bob hairstyle, one of the iconic images of film. Chuck's preview of this year's festival is a good primer. (Portage Theater, 4050 N. Milwaukee Ave., 8 p.m., $12)
