Memorial for Mackinac Sailor to Be Held Friday

A memorial service has been scheduled for Friday for Mark Morley, one of the two sailors who died during the Race to Mackinac a couple of weeks back. Morley was a crewman on the WingNuts, which capsized during a thunderstorm with winds reaching 50 knots near Charlevoix, MI. Boats participating in the race reported seeing winds of up to 80 knots on the water.
Preliminary autopsy reports indicate Morley and Suzanne Bickel, both of Saginaw, MI, indicate both died of head trauma sustained the accident. Other boats reported collisions, boats being pused aground due to the heavy winds, snapped masts and torn sails.
Investigations by the Chicago Yacht Club and Charlevoix County Sheriff’s office are ongoing.
