Pencil This In

Music

Pianist/organist Marco Benevento studied under modern jazz greats Brad Mehldau and Joanne Brackeen and has played with Charlie Hunter and head Phish Trey Anastasio. HIs music incorporates pedals, amplifiers, rejiggered electronic toys and sundry effects to create a fascinating repertoire of songs by the likes of Neil Young, Led Zeppelin and Beck, interspersed with wildly original compositions. Benevento performs at Mayne Stage with opening act The Hue. Doors open at 10 p.m. sith the show starting at 11. Tickets to this 21+ show are available online.

Gold Motel is playing a free in-store performance at the Michigan Avenue Apple Store at 5:30 p.m.

Gambling for Charity

The annual Gaming for Green event at Galleria Marchetti (825 W. Erie) raises funds for Chicago Gateway Green’s Tree Partnership Program and its goal of planting 15,000 trees in Chicago by 2015. Those who don’t opt for poker can try their luck at other casino games during the event, including roulette, craps and blackjack. Players and spectators will enjoy Galleria Marchetti’s famous Italian specialties and complementary beverages. (5:30 p.m., $40 spectator tickets available here. $150 buy-in for Texas Hold 'Em poker. )

Cooking Classes

The Alliance Francaise de Chicago has an exclusive cooking demonstration with pastry chef Christian Boudard of the Guy Savoy restaurant in Paris. Boudard will demonstrate his techniques for making his famous pastry: La Boule Noire. Participants will enjoy pastries that Boudard has prepared, while learning how to create the various elements of La Boule Noire, including pears in syrup, chocolate tuiles, pear sorbet and chocolate sauce. (54 W. Chicago Ave., 6-8 p.m., $50 for Alliance Francaise members, $60 for non-members)
