Friday Flashback: Pilsen in the 80s and 90s

By Kevin Robinson in Arts & Entertainment on Aug 5, 2011 7:20PM

As Our Fair City steadies herself for another weekend of headliners and beer line at Lolla, we take a look back this week at a time not long before Lollapalooza, when Chicago had a sound of her own, and our neighborhoods had yet to be discovered (not for long, mind you.)

If you grew up around Chicago in the 80's and 90's, you know the name Julian Jumpin' Perez because he was a personality on B96. What you may not know is that Perez was a member of the Hot Mix 5 during Chicago's hey-day as the birthplace of a burgeoning House music movement. Perez and house music went on to bigger things. Like much of Chicago, so has Pilsen. In a way, today's Flashback serves as a reminder of where we came from, but also of where we can go.
