We've given you some basic survival tips and now it's time to give you a few suggestions about who to see (and maybe a few bands you'll be OK skipping) this weekend at Lollapalooza. We asked a few of our writers to share their personal views so feel free to agree or disagree. We just like to get the conversation started. And this is by no means all-inclusive so let us know who you're seeing!
The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart: Sunday, Sony Stage, 3 p.m.
There is absolutely nothing original about the Pains Of Being Pure At Heart. They obviously adore all thing shoegaze and late '80s and that is 100% OK with us. Why? Because they still manage to write insanely catchy songs infused with joy and heartache and all things that that remind us of what it was like to be 14 all over again.
The Cars: Music Unlimited Stage, 4 p.m.
The Cars are mostly remembered for their mainstream hits that helped define the power pop vein of New Wave, but it's their darker and weirder tendencies that always attracted us. The band's new album errs more on the side of catchy rather than odd but we're looking forward to a career spanning set from the recently reunited band. - Tankboy
Cage The Elephant: Sunday, Sony Stage, 5:15 p.m.
We saw these guys play at Subterranean a few years ago to a crowd of about 20 to 50 people and the band brought it so heavy and so hard they acted as if they were trying to wow an arena-sized crowd. We're curious to see how they up that ante when actually appearing in front of an arena-sized crowd! - Tankboy
Foo Fighters: Sunday, Music Unlimited Stage, 8 p.m.
We saw them at Metro last night and Dave Grohl and his crew are in superior form. In the last couple years Foo Fighters were gaining a reputation for bringing the rock but forgetting the heart but that has been fully redeemed. Expect the Foo Fighters to turn Grant Park into one of the best basement parties EVAR. - Tankboy
Portugal The Man: Sunday, Sony Stage, 5 p.m.
Okay, so over the last decade or so we have to say we’ve been totally inundated with bands and solo artist taking a joy ride in Mark Bolan’s “Jeepster.” Between David Vandervelde, Pop Levi and Devandra Barnhart’s last record, we’re pretty much T-Rex’d out. Portugal The Man only promises more of the same. Derivative, highly unoriginal and after listening to his last record, “In The Mountain In The Cloud,” only a handful of somewhat quality material. We waited and waited for that ah-ha moment when listening, but sadly came up short. Nothing new here folks, walk to the next stage. - Michele Lenni
