Dropping the royal "we" here for a moment: I'm working on a story about the development of the Henry C. Palmisano Nature Preserve that will run on the site in a few weeks. Having moved to Bridgeport in 1999 when the park was still a closed landfill for clean construction debris, the transformation from a former quarry to the park it is today has been nothing short of astounding.
In conjunction with the story, Chicago Elevated's (and Chicagoist alumna) Margaret Hicks and I are teaming up to do a walking tour of the park on Sept. 17 at 2 p.m. We'll start at the highest point of the park and work our way down to the lowest level, where remainder of the park's past as a limestone quarry is now the backdrop for a retention pond fully stocked with fish. The total time of the tour should take about 90 minutes. Margaret is capping the tour to 20 people and we both would love to see this fill quickly. Call Margaret at 773-593-4873 or email her to RSVP.
