Morning Box Score: Sox Rally, Cubs Lift Garza

By Chuck Sudo in News on Aug 31, 2011 1:00PM

White Sox 8, Minnesota 6

Even though we still think the White Sox will fall short of Detroit in the Al Central, they demand your attention. Part of their recent success can be attributed to Tyler Flowers, Alejandro de Aza and Dayan Viciedo. The recent Charlotte callups haven't been taught to curl into a fetal position when playing the Minnesota Twins. Last night Viciedo and de Aza were instrumental in the Sox coming back from two three-run deficits. De Aza hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning. A throwing error by Twins first baseman Michael Cuddyer allowed de Aza to reach base and Paul Konerko and Alex Rios to score. Viciedo scored in a five-run fifth inning. Zach Stewart took the no decision while Will Ohman got the win for the Sox. Sergio Santos picked up his 28th save.

Cubs 5, San Francisco 2

Matt Garza has had some bad luck in his first Cubs season. Last night he received the run support that's been lacking most of the season. Alfonso Soriano and Geovany Soto each drove in two runs to back up Garza's 6-2/3 innings of work on the mound. Garza struck out six and scattered nine hits in his start, but it was enough for him to earn the win while Sean Marshall, Kerry Wood and Carlos Marmol (who picked up his 31st save) shut down the Giants the rest of the way.
