Morning Box Score: Sox Rebound in Minnesota; Garza, Marmol Lock Up Reds

By Chuck Sudo in News on Sep 6, 2011 1:00PM

White Sox 2-4, Minnesota 1-0

With their chances in the AL Central all but over, the White Sox rolled into Target Field and swept a day-night doubleheader against the Twins. Pitching was the story in both games. Philip Humber made a strong return to the rotation after missing two weeks from being hit in the eye with a liner. Humber held Minnesota scoreless over seven strong innings of work, striking out six. while Alejandro de Aza and Alexei Ramirez each drove in a run. In the nightcap, Zach Stewart flirted with a perfect game until Danny Valencia doubled in the eighth inning. It would be the only hit Stewart surrendered in going the distance, striking out nine in the process. Brent Morel had two RBI and both Ramirez and Juan Pierre drove in one to support Stewart.

Cubs 4, Reds 3

Matt Garza pitched well enough to get the win, striking out eight over 7-2/3 innings of work. But the Cubs fielders did him no favors. Errors by Reed Johnson and Starlin Castro led to two of the three runs allowed by Garza. Lucky for Garza Carlos Marmol was back to form after a bit of rest. Marmol only needed nine pitches to lock down the win for Garza and earn his 32nd save of the season.
