Ever wanted to visit the Alliance Francaise de Chicago and see what classes and events they have to offer? Tonight is an ideal opportunity to do so with their open house. Bring a friend to visit their facilities, meet teachers, current students and volunteers, and try one of their French classes from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. Wine and cheese will be served.(810 N. Film

After a Labor Day hiatus the Northwest Chicago Film Society kicks off their fall schedule tonight with a screening of Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger's 1945 masterpiece I Know Where I'm Going! Determined to escape her middle-class background, stubborn 25-year-old Wendy Hiller leaves her home in Manchester with plans to marry a wealthy old industrialist in Scotland, but gets stranded on the Island of Mull and falls in love with a young Naval Officer instead. By the time Hiller can get to her fiancé, she has no reason to. The film will be screened in a restored 35mm print. (Portage Theater, 4050 N. Milwaukee Ave; 7:30 p.m.; $5 admission.)

Comedy

The Laughter Against the Machine: American Controversy Tour will bring a comedic peacekeeping mission to the most polarized quagmires in the US, the flashpoints of American ignorance and upheaval. Succeed or fail, comedians W. Kamau Bell, Nato Green, and Janine Brito will also be capture it all on video for an unconventional tour documentary.
