Stepdad formed in Chicago a few years ago and then moved away but they return to town tonight for a show at Subterranean. You should go see them play.

In a drab world we need bands that bring color to life. While many are reveling in the current "boots and sweater" weather that's settling over our city, others are already lamenting the dimming rays of summer and can only see the cold walls of winter swiftly making their way towards us. Physically we can do nothing to stop this. But we can find mental places of refuge, and Stepdad is perfectly suited to provide the soundtrack for our happy place. Their music is infused with rainbows and unicorns balanced by a lithe sexiness that burbles up in the shiny crevices between perfectly sunny skyscrapers of synth and tribal drumming. Just when that seems like it might be a bit much they shift gears and whip out a sweet guitar line right out of an '80s teen dramedy and add just a drip of gravitas to the proceedings. And then it's right back to happy fun times.

Let's pretend summer never ends and see Stepdad together at Subterranean tonight, O.K.?
