Nnamdi Ogbonnaya is a 21-year-old drummer/songwriter out of Chicago’s South Side. We don’t know much else about the guy, except that he’s involved in a bunch of other acts we’re not familiar with (The Para-medics, Nervous Passenger, Richard Def and the Mos Pryors, Albatross, Pisces at the Animal Fair, and Water House). Oh, and that he recently released a ridiculous album called Rotissabooty.
The cover art is pretty representative of the album in that it doesn’t make much sense. It’s a humorous, hip hop-driven album that mingles with a wide range of styles - like indie, jazz, R&B, and rap - and relies on seemingly nonsensical (often food-based) comedy.
The album’s title track, for example, is a cluster of staccato synth, tropical beats, classical elements, and falsetto vocals that serenade, “It’s twirling round and round in my head, your rotissabooty.” A good chunk of the track is comical dialogue between a boy and his mother that, though entertaining, doesn’t really make any sense.
There are a handful of other comedy skits scattered throughout the album, as well as a song about a shart, one about a peanut butter and mayo sandwich, and a little ditty about salad-tossing a big, beautiful dookie booty. Crude humor aside, the album has its moments of musical excellence. “Darling Darlene” is really very pleasant and endearing. And “Dariville” is a serious head-nodding beat made even more badass with a Curb Your Enthusiasm reference and the fact that it’s about a trip to Dairy Queen.
In all, it’s a funny album, but there’s really not much to take away from it. Ogbonnaya clearly has songwriting skills, and it would be nice to see him put out a more serious effort next time around - or at least one that doesn’t rely so heavily on comedy for comedy’s sake. Anyway, it’s free to download below, so check it out for yourself.
