2011_10_4_bucktown_apple_pie.jpg What started in 2005 as a small event to raise money for improvements to Holstein Park has now grown, in its seventh year, to one of Chicago's most anticipated food events of the season. This year's Bucktown Apple Pie Contest is expected to attract nearly 2,000 people to Holstein Park.

New this year is a professional division where professional pastry chefs, local restaurants, farmers market vendors and others will compete to see who makes the best apple pie in the city. Guests attending the contest can buy whole pies for $25. As of yesterday there were still some spaces available for amateurs to submit entries to the contest. If you can bake two pies for the event and afford the $20 entry fee, you should test your mettle.

Friends of Holstein Park is aiming to raise $15,000 this year and every penny, and entry, will count toward that goal.

Friends of Holstein Park presents the seventh annual Bucktown Apple Pie Contest, 2-5 p.m. Oct. 16 at Holstein Park. (2200 N. Oakley Ave.)
