Sesame Street Tackles Childhood Hunger

By Chuck Sudo in Arts & Entertainment on Oct 9, 2011 3:00PM

Tonight on PBS stations across the nation Sesame Street and the Children's Television Workshop present a primetime special, Growing Hope Against Hunger. The special tackles the problems of food insecurity and childhood hunger in America. Sesame Street will put their own stamp on the fight by introducing a new Muppet character named Lily, a child who goes to school hungry whose family deals with food insecurity.

17 million children in America - one in every four children - goes hungry every day, a staggering number that should be uncalled for in the Land of Plenty. The special will share stories of real-life families who deal with putting food on their tables and should be required viewing for parents and adults alike. Below is a highlight reel of the special.

Growing Hope for Hunger airs tonight at 6 p.m. on WTTW-11.
