Occupy Chicago Sent out a press release near the dinner hour yesterday announcing their re-intentions to set up a permanent base in Grant Park.

A march is scheduled for 7 p.m. tonight where they'll march from the Financial District to Michigan and Congress, where they plan on setting up a permanent home at the base of the Spearman statue. The press release reads:

“The 1st Amendment guarantees the American people the right to peaceably assemble. Tomorrow, we are going to use that right. Occupy Chicago calls on all local citizens to stand up and join us in this struggle. Our government is corrupt with money from corporate interests, and it is killing our democracy. America belongs to the people, and as the people, it is our responsibility to stand up and protect democracy when it is threatened.”

As Aaron wrote earlier this week, Occupy Chicago is trying to set up a permanent base of operations at Grant Park. Their attempts also are a violation of the 11 p.m. public curfew for Chicago parks, which are established as a safety measure. I'm sympathetic to a point with Occupy Chicago's cause and find their right to assembly and the Park District's curfew mutually exclusive of each other.

175 people were arrested last week trying to set up a permanent home for Occupy Chicago. Occupy Chicago has also called on Mayor Rahm Emanuel to drop the charges for those arrested.
