Second City Postpones Opening of New Theater

The Second City is delaying the premiere of its new 280-seat venue UP Comedy Club by about a month, according to Time Out Chicago. The new comedy club/cabaret was supposed to have a soft opening in late November, followed by a grand opening with comedian and actor Brian Posehn on Dec. 1. Citing licensing issues, officials at Second City are aiming for a mid-December soft opening and a grand opening early in 2012.

Second City is renovating the space formerly occupied by theater show Tony 'n' Tina's Wedding into a small theater for comedy-cabarets, stand-up performances and performances by Second City Theatricals. Second City chief executive Andrew Alexander told the Tribune's Chris Jones that plans are to give the theater a retro feel bringing back memories of classic Chicago venues like the Gaslight Club.
