While researching his latest book, author and blogger Steve Plotnicki was so impressed by the no-nonsense farm-to-table ethos of Midwestern chefs that he termed it "Modern Midwestern Cuisine." (Plotnicki's from New York, so maybe it's an East Coast thing to have give the obvious a term.) As Grub Street Chicago's Mike Gebert writes, there are so many chefs ascribing to cooking with fresh farmers market ingredients we can take it for granted.

Plotnicki lists five chefs as best defining this style: Justin Aprahamian of Sanford Restaurant in Milwaukee; Josh Adams of June in Peoria; Gerard Craft of Niche in St. Louis; Michael Bulkowski of Revolver in Findlay, OH; and North Pond's Bruce Sherman.

The other four chefs and Plotnicki will join Sherman at North Pond next Wednesday for a "Modern Midwestern Table" dinner 6:30 p.m. Nov. 9. It's a six-course meal (the menu is available for view here) at $120 a person. But guests also receive a copy of Plotnicki's new book and this would be an ideal opportunity to sample the food of some amazing out-of-town chefs. Reservations can be made by calling North pond at 773-477-5845.
