Fan of Urlacher? There's an App for That

2011_11_7_urlacher_app.jpg Bears fans are understandably big fans of Brian Urlacher. Before the Bears take on the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football in a few hours, we'll slip on our "54" jerseys. We'll cheer on his interceptions and tackles, especially when he pounds Michael Vick into the ground. But do we also want him in your pocket at all times, on our iPhones?

Urlacher recently released an official smartphone app, available for free in the iTunes store for your iPhone or iPod Touch. In its current form, the app doesn't include much -- a couple quotes, some pics of his game room and football camp, a couple videos, a play list of his favorite tunes that we can purchase in the iTunes store (like Metallica, Eminem and Hank Williams Jr.). There is also an alarm clock where one can get Urlacher to roust them from bed with wake up calls like, "Sleep is for the weak" or "Wakey, Wakey!" If you pay extra in-app, you can have a picture of yourself superimposed with Urlacher himself.

For an app to make it to our iPhone and stay, it needs to offer ongoing benefit. Urlacher's app wasn't worth 5 minutes of exploring, let alone ongoing utility -- we just don't need Urlacher's voice telling us to get up in the morning. Apparently, apps are the latest ego-stroking status symbol for the athlete or celeb who has everything... but we just don't see the point.
