Who says University of Chicago students are just a bunch of bookish nerds? Chicago Maroon photo editor Darren Leow got a front row seat to a bit of student street justice as a gaggle of U of C scholars put the squeeze on a would-be laptop larcenist in the Regenstein Library this week.

A contracted employee for the library was arrested after being caught in the act of trying to swipe a student’s laptop. The student gave chase, attracting others in pursuit. Eventually the alleged thief was stopped when students outside the library stood in front of the glass doors, preventing him from exiting the building while others restrained him for police.

The Regenstein Library sits on the site of the first Stagg Field where the university enjoyed its football heyday a century ago. No doubt the Hall of Fame talents from the old Monsters of the Midway teams would appreciate the current students’ brawny efforts to get tough on campus crime!
