Tragedy struck UIC Medical Center last night when a man allegedly shot his ex-wife to death in one of the hospital complex's parking garages.

47-year-old Earl Roberts was arrested shortly after 6:30 a.m. after a UIC police officer recognized him during a routine traffic stop, which turned into a foot chase. Roberts is believed to have shot the woman, whose name has not been released, around 11:40 p.m. last night. UIC placed the medical center on lockdown as they engaged in a room-to-room search of the complex. Another building at the 1200 block of South Damen Avenue has been cordoned off by police as they search it for evidence.

Sources told the Tribune she was shot in the head with a long-barreled handgun, which was later recovered at the 2200 Block of West 13th Street. Both Roberts and the victim were employed at UIC Medical Center. Roberts was a 15-year member of the housekeeping staff.

Roberts has not yet been charged with the murder and will be transferred to UIC Police headquarters later for processing.
