Morning Box Score: Toews Lifts Blackhawks in Shootout, NIU Wins MAC Football Crown

By Chuck Sudo in News on Dec 3, 2011 3:30PM

Blackhawks 5, NY Islanders 4 (SO)

Jonathan Toews was magnificent last night. The Blackhawks captain scored on a second-period shorthanded goal to give Chicago a 3-2 lead. But the Islanders tied the game to force overtime, then a shootout, where Toews scored the only goal for either team.

Northern Illinois 23, Ohio 20

The Huskies looked like they were primed to lose another MAC title game, falling behind 20-0 to the Bobcats. But Chandler Harnish showed again why he's the Huskies best player. Harnish threw three touchdown passes in the second half and Mathew Sims kicked a 33-yard field goal on the final play of the game to give NIU its first MAC championship in 28 years.

Northwestern 92, Mississippi Valley State 67

The Wildcats roared to a 39-point halftime lead and cruised to an easy victory at Wels-Ryan Arena. Nick Fruendt scored 21 points and Drew Crawford hit four 3-pointers among his 14 points. NU was so dominant that leading scorer John Shurna didn't play in the second half.
