The Weekend Flashback: Halsted Drive-in Theater

By Chuck Sudo in Arts & Entertainment on Dec 3, 2011 4:30PM

The Chicago area used to have a glut of drive-ins decades ago. One, the Halsted Drive-in in Riverdale, was the first 4-screen drive-in theater in the United States. It was converted to a single-screen drive-in in 1957 and renamed the Halsted Drive-in Theater. In 1979 a second screen was added.

The Halsted Drive-in closed in 1987 and re-opened briefly in 1991 before it was torn town to make way for a post office.
