Strychnine strips their lo-fi aesthetic down to its dirtiest and rawest sound and the band's garage and surf sensibilities feed as much off classic pop songwriting as they do psychedelic riffing and extended jamming. These fellas hearken back to ye olde days of rock & roll when it was noisy and dirty and recorded without them fancy overdubs and such. Local quintet Charming People, featuring members of The Deccas, John Drake and the Shakes and K.K. Rampage, have a swinging throwback sound - sugary sweet pop with a hint of darkness behind the veil, a sound they call "Petula Clark and Phil Spector interpret The Doors." Both bands play a triple bill along with Village at the Empty Bottle tonight at 9:30 p.m. (1035 N. Western Ave., $8)

Speakeasy

The Trencherman preview at Bar DeVille tonight with bartender Tona Palomino is shaping up to be the cocktail event of the evening. Roger has the scoop on two of the cocktails being served tonight: candy cane infused gin with clarified pear nectar and lemon juice; and a celery gin & tonic with Batavia Arrack, pineapple juice, all-spice liquor and sparkling wine.Enter at 711 N. Damen, as opposed to Bar DeVille's front entrance at 701 N. Damen. It kicks off at 9 p.m.

FIlm

The Northwest Chicago Film Society presents an ultra rare screening of the 1920 Huckleberry Finn tonight, presented in a beautiful new 35mm print from George Eastman House and with live accompaniment by Jay Warren. Thee film will be preceded by the 1949 Chuck Jones cartoon Mississippi Hare, presented in a beautiful 35mm technicolor print. (Portage Theater, 4050 N. Milwaukee Ave., $5, 7:30 p.m.)
