You may not know Bears wide receiver Sam Hurd — with only eight receptions this season he doesn't get much playing time — but Hurd is making headlines today after he was arrested for trying to establish a drug distribution network in the Chicago area. What's that old adage about idle hands?
Hurd was arrested outside Morton's The Steakhouse in Rosemont yesterday after allegedly receiving a package of cocaine from an undercover officer. He is accused of saying that he and a partner already distributes four kilos of cocaine a week throughout the area and wanted to arrange a deal with the undercover officer to buy 5-10 kilos of cocaine and a thousand pounds of marijuana per week, and said at the meeting he plays for the Bears and would be able to pay the narc Thursday. Bears players are paid on Thursday.
Hurd faces one count of possessing a half kilogram of cocaine with intent to distribute. He signed a deal with the Bears during the offseason after spending his first five with the Dallas Cowboys. The Bears released a statement that said:
“We are aware of Sam’s arrest and are continuing to gather details surrounding it,” the Bears said in a statement. “We are disappointed whenever these circumstances arise. We will deal with them appropriately once we have all the information.”
