Film

Just before Christmas, Lee Leander is caught shoplifting. It is her third offense. She is prosecuted by John Sargent. He gets the trial postponed because it is hard to get a conviction at Christmastime. But he feels sorry for her and arranges for her bail, and ends up taking her home to his mother for Christmas. Surrounded by a loving family (in stark contrast to Lee's own family background) they fall in love. This creates a new problem: how do they handle the upcoming trial? That's the plot for the 1940 film Remember the Night starring Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray. The Northwest Chicago Film Society calls it their "favorite get-out-of-prison-before-Christmas movie ever." It screens in a new 35 mm print tomorrow night at the Portage Theater (4050 N. Milwaukee Ave., 7:30 p.m., $5.)

Beer Tasting

Didn't get your hands on some of Half Acre's "Big Hugs" coffee stout? Head to City Provisions, where they'll be pouring samples from 6-8 p.m. tonight. (1818 W. Wilson)
