Rascher's map of the Meatpacking District, circa 1890

Samantha said we'd have a field day with this new look at Rashcer's 1890 birdseye view map of the Meatpacking District and she was not exaggerating. The fine folks at the Big Map Blog have taken the map and coded it so that viewers can zoom in on its tiniest details. In the process, it gives the viewer a new look at a map as synonymous with Chicago's onetime status as the hog butcher to the world as Upton Sinclair's The Jungle, with which this map is often associated.

This is your morning time-suck. You don't want to be diving head-first into the new year, anyway.
