Doomsday Clock Moves Closer To Midnight

The Doomsday Clock, created by University of Chicago scientists in 1945 as a way to convey threats to humanity and the planet, moved one minute closer to midnight yesterday. We're now a scant five minutes away from Armageddon.

Two years ago the Doomsday Clock ticked backwards to six minutes. Perhaps fitting the ever slowly building end of the world 2012 hysteria, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists pushed the hands forward, saying:

“Two years ago, it appeared that world leaders might address the truly global threats that we face. In many cases, that trend has not continued or been reversed.”

BAS board members cited the failure of world leaders to act on the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty and a failure to address climate change in a meaningful way as their reasons we’re a step closer to living a Mad Max lifestyle.

The last time the clock’s hands rested at five minutes to midnight was 2007.
