Pencil This In: MLK Day Edition

DuSable Museum will celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and the Civil Rights Movement with our annual King Day celebration. The day will be filled with live performances, storytelling, films, food and activities for the entire family. Check out their King Day page for details.

Commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through family activities and crafts reflecting his messages of peace and justice at the Chicago History Museum. Listen to music that honors Dr. King, and attend a performance of The MLK Project by the Writers’ Theatre. Full schedule of events here.

Occupy Chicago has an "Occupy the Dream" rally scheduled for 3 p.m. at their regular protest location outside the Federal Reserve Building to protest fraudulent foreclosures and astronomical student debt. Full schedule is here.

A grand tradition returns when the Chicago Sinfonietta honors the American icon and civil rights leader. Black Pearl Chamber Orchestra founder Jeri Lynn Johnson joins Maestro Mei-Ann Chen on the podium to lead Ives, and renowned flutist Nicole Mitchell premieres her own composition. The mighty voices of a gospel choir conclude the tribute with a rousing finale. Tickets are $26-$50, with special pricing for children & students. The African America Arts Alliance of Chicago's MLK Celebration takes place at the Black Ensemble Theatre at 7 p.m. this evening. It's free. (4450 N. Clark St.)
